I have two Ike dollars that are in terrible condition. They have this hard black substance on them. I was wondering what I could use to clean these two coins. I do know that you are not suppose to clean coins, but trust me with these two it will not hurt the value at all. Thanks for the help.

There are many things that could fit the description of a "hard black substance" and they cannot all be removed in the same manner. Try a soak in water first and if it does nothing move on to a soak in an organic solvent like acetone. If neither of those work, then removal could be problematic.

Yes by all means try the water first. I had some coins that had been glued to cardboard and the cardboard was still stuck to them. Soaked them in acetone for a day or so and no luck so I let them sit for 2 more weeks. Nothing, nada, zilch, the cardboard and glue was still there. So I was pouring a glass of water from my Britta and said to myself why not. well about 15 minutes later I pulled one out of the water and rubbed it with my finger and the crud started coming right off.
