I just picked up some original rolls of the above mentioned LMC's. Three rolls of D and 2 rolls of P. One of the P rolls is stamped with " U.S. Mint Opening Ceremony Hodgenville, KY".
It was reported that $5,000 worth of the new pennies were exchanged at the ceremony. Initially, attendees were allowed to exchange currency for a maximum of $5 worth of the new pennies, although they were allowed to go through the exchange line more than once. Towards the end of the ceremony, people were allowed to buy $25 boxes of the new pennies.
It seems rolls were postmarked with the place and date of the ceremony, then the stamp destroyed.
My question is, were all 10,000 rolls postmarked and is that the only way to authenticate as a first day of issue?
I am wanting to go through these rolls for some possible 67 grades or maybe better. Would a high grade example have more value if certified first day of issue?

The 1st day rolls I would put in a plastic nickel tube (unopened) to protect the label. The others I would search.

The only way imo to attain the designation of first day issue would be to send an entire roll in. I
do not see a way how you could cherry pick the best ones out unless doing so in front of a submission
at a show.

Yes Dearborn it is. That is the way I received it, with a label wrapped around the cap stating "Certified First day of issue Feb. 12th 2009". But I suppose anyone with a label maker could have created that.
The other 4 rolls were not in tubes.

That stamp doesn't authentic the roll. There was nobody there stamping rolls with that. The only way to really prove a roll came from the event was to take them yourself to the post office for cancellation. The wrapper wasn't anything special.

These were hugely popular in 2009 - stamped and canceled rolls were selling for as high as $200/roll. The next events were pretty busy after that although I heard the LP4 one wasn't too bad.

I can't find any of my pictures. With the help of some generous forum members I assembled stamped and cancelled rolls from each event. If you dig deep in the forum, you can certainly find a lot of discussions on the 2009 release!

The rolls I cracked from each event were 63-66 at best. The problem was water stains, the mint could make pretty nice coins but they had a lot of these stains. It was so bad the TPGs graded by spots more than anything. Finding nice examples without bad water staining is the key.

I don't know what the original event rolls are selling for now - there are NONE on ebay (even completed sales). Collectors are holding tight to those rolls (me included). If someone is charging more for "event rolls", I'd say save your money and buy other solid date rolls for cheaper.
