Can't get my desk clear as I keep finding more stuff. Just pulled this one out of a roll and looks like a contender for a pretty high grade. This is the "blunt top 4 over pointy top 4" variety, and there are three dies that show this. This is die one, the most common and listed as FS-101, while the other two are less common and not given an FS numbers. They can be a little tough to tell apart, but the mint mark locations are slightly different, the strength and shape of the pointy bit differs a bit, and at least for die 1 the die scratch between the ends of the 9 is usually visible to some extent. 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent doubled die - DDO-001, FS-101

That is one really nice looking variety. Gem at least and maybe even MS66!

Some of the DDO-001 that you show are so minor as to be nearly indistinguishable - at least to a novice eye such as mine. In your excellent close-up photo of the date I can barely see doubling at the lower edge of the 1. I salute you for having the patience and acquired knowledge necessary to pursue these coins. I'll stick with 1955 DDO-001, which I can actually see.

Well, one person's minor bit of trivial doubling is another person's CherryPickers' Guide major DDO. With the last one of these in MS66 selling for $350 back in October, a price only a few coins posted on this board can reach, I'd say this little minor bit of DDO-001 doubling was worth the effort to look for it. I post such things here to help folks learn what to look for out there in the wild, as yes, even quite small bits of doubling can be of value. Why this one is interesting is that it is a rare class III doubled die. This is where two different designs were on the working hubs used to make the working die. Same as the much more famous 1960 large date/small date or small date/large date coins. The doubling shows up where the fonts were different in shape or size, not because the hubs rotated or otherwise moved. Here you mostly can see it as an extension below the 1 of the date, and on the tip of the 4 of the date, which is where it gets the name "blunt top 4 over pointy top 4". I get it, I really do, that the 1955 DDO-001 is amazing, and some folks really just want something amazing and not trivial in their collection. I've posted two or three of those over the years. But most folks here are searching for coins, not looking for coins to buy, and no one is actually finding any 1955 DDO-001 coins, so from an education standpoint it makes more sense to post coins people might find if they know to look for them. I enjoy collecting even the trivial stuff, many don't really do that, but knowing what it all looks like is valuable information for anyone hunting for varieties so I don't mind posting up coins I think will help others find things, trivial or otherwise.

@bats - my apology that what was intended as a compliment to your knowledge and generous sharing was instead read as a negative. It's a common issue when sharing only written text devoid of voice inflection and body language. I did not intend for you to interpret 'indistinguishable' as 'trivial'. I literally meant that even under magnification my eyes are not trained/skilled to see the doubling. I say that you provide a great service to the CCF members by generous sharing of your excellent photographs coupled with obviously years of numismatic learning. Pretty much as you explained it in the follow-up yo my post. Thank you for all that you do, and please keep it up. I enjoy reading your threads even if am not very knowledgable on the topics.

Nah, not really taken as a negative at all, just sort of saying out loud my reasons for posting things here. A bit of education, a bit to fill in the void as sometimes it seems like too many of the posts are just damaged coins someone needs information on, and sometimes just a coin I'm photographing for my records anyway so post it up. What I don't do is post the value of the coins, as this isn't a youtube channel trying to get people to watch it, and that has been interesting. Some of the really expensive stuff I've posted just got little attention, while some of the random odd ones with no value get a lot of attention. It is one of the things I like about this site, that folks aren't here trying to see how to make a quick buck, but to enjoy the hobby.

This die and it's two siblings, dies II and III , are all three the blunt top 4 over the pointed top 4. The interesting part is that there were no 1949 cents produced with a pointed top 4. The pointed top 4 was used the previous year , 1948. I have always thought that these three dies had a small claim to being overdates

Stoneman, I talked with the guy who made the case for the 1943-S DDO-001 being an overdate (which has been accepted as such). When I suggested that this one should be the next die to get overdate status he pretty much rejected the idea. So right now those who might move forward with that idea don't believe that it is, but I have always said it pretty much has to be.
