Hello,

I bought yersterday this stater (or nomos) from Kroton and I have serious doubts about its authenticity.

What makes me nervous is especially the obverse with Herakles lying on the Lion's skin. Of course, it is very worn, but this is not problematic per se. But Herakles' thigh is extremely strange, it looks as if it floated above the rest of his body. When we think about the extraordinary dexterity of the Greek engravers, especially for this type, this seems very odd. Also the triangle above does not look as a triangle (well, this could just be worn).

I copy two pictures of my coin and other examples of the same die. I chose them worn for a better comparison.

Any thoughts?

They had an engraver who almost invented cubism?

You found one reverse that matches the style of yours. It is an odd style. Bad die, cannot have been damage to the coin.

I think a modern forger would not do an unappealing coin. Or only one bad die of a pair?

Thank you, Jecz79, for your unique answer. I must say that it is at least the forth time that I submit a problem and receive almost no answer. 175 views and one opinion! Wow guys you are impressive ! I will stop visiting this website, it has become completely useless.
