Just zinc rot, that "S" is not even the right size.

Yes, I'm thinking a combination of a plating issue and hardened 'crud' in the vicinity of the mint mark. That S like feature appears smaller than the size of the font used for the D mint mark. Beware Pareidolia.

First you can rule out OMM because they stopped in 1955. Looks like zinc rot.
