Hello,

Today I came across a 1983 quarter that has a diagonal line across the N in "IN GOD WE TRUST". In front of the "IN" I can see a gouge, which I'm guessing is where the extra material came from for the line across the N. Is this an mint error or damage?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The "I" has taken a hit moving the metal over.

The help is greatly appreciated! I'm new to coin collecting and don't want to waste anyone's time for sure. One other thing I noticed is that the edge of the quarter at the bottom is much thicker more pronounced than at the top. Would this also be from damage (i.e. vending machine wear) or is it from a slightly off center strike?

It could either be a slight off centre strike or a misaligned die.
We need a picture of the reverse to say which it is.
This is why we always like a photo of both sides when posting.

I have uploaded a picture of the back of the 1983 quarter. Thank you for the guidance through this!
