Have noticed that a lot (all?) of 1/2 rupee coins have most of the detail off the flan. Is this because 1/2 rupees were struck using a 1 rupee die? And if so, is it possible to further identify a half rupee by finding a 1 rupee struck from the same die?

I think it might depend on the local practice in the mint in question; some mints would have used specially-made half-rupee dies, others would have used a generic die for all denominations. It probably depended on how often fractional rupees were struck at that mint - some mints made lots of half-rupees, some made none at all. A mint that only rarely struck half-rupees would probably have simply used a regular rupee die pair, when the need arose.
