I live here in the Peoples Republic of Southern California and am trying to find out the rules of metal detecting some parks and schools around here, specifically the Pasadena and South Pasadena area. Should I go to city hall to find out if it's okay to detect? I'm normally a gold nugget guy, not a coin shooter. Thanks. Dave swcoin.ecrater.com

I don't know anything about California laws, but you might check with the Dept. of parks and recreation or whatever they are called out there. They typed me up a letter saying it was okay to search the parks. As for the schools you could either check at the county school administration office or with the school principal to see if it is okay. I've never had any problems looking at the schools. I don't go during school hours so there is usually no one there. There are a few schools here that are posted. I checked with the principal first before going out there to look. I have been told twice that I couldn't look so I don't go there. Not worth getting locked up.

Thanks for the info Mike. I appreciate it. I'm going to start with my inlaws house. It was built in 1937 and has a nice back lawn. Maybe a wheatie or two

Most generally, it's better to ask if there are any rules againstit, rather than asking if it is OK. A subtle difference? Yes, it is, but an important one. Here's why: By asking for permissionyou leave the leeway to the government drone to make the decision. It's pretty easy for them to say "no" just on general principles. Because, you know, you really can't be trusted. However, by asking if there are specific rules prohibitingit, there is no "judgment call" left up to the person you are talking to. They will either tell you there are, or there aren't. Period.
It's your park/playground/schoolyard. Public, you know?.
Don't forget to fill your holes and cut good 3 sided plugs that will allow the grass to live!

Dave , You are lucky to be able to hunt all year long. The frost is still in the ground here. The home built in 1937 will hold a lot more than some wheaties. Set your sights on SILVER. Less chance of a rattler as well.

That 210 freeway took out a lot of the older homes a few years back. I use to live in Montrose, don't even know if it still exists. Can you check out the Rose Bowl area for goodies?

I live near Washington's Crossing NJ and there are signs everywhere saying NO METAL DETECTING. Shame... I bet there is some cool stuff lurking around there!
