http://www.nationalbank.kz/?docid=3...D2367D63AC8EI received an e-mail from my friend in Kazakhstan and it struck me that I do have some notes but no coins. I checked the net and after I saw their coinage, I'm planning a set up for my friend so next time he's here, he can bring some coins along. Check out the commemoratives. Wow! They have some really nice coin designs. I like the falcon in particular on the 100 Tehre coin.

That guy with the Falcon may be one of my grand grand grand fathers in Middle Asia FYI, it is TENGE, capital G in Cryllic looks like r, and H is read as N in latin alphabet Kazakhs are still using Russian Alphabet after USSR collapsed.

Sorry about that. I wasn't sure what letter to put there, though I was pretty sure it wasn't an R.

It's quite difficult to understand a new alphabet, if I didn't spend my first grade reading cryllic, I probably couldn't tell anything.

Noone can know all Bryan, the thing is to enjoy the coins from different cultures. But after all it's a matter of taste, I know many happy collectors who stick to a specific area. One of my friends collects only banknotes with the Queen on them, another collects only pre-republic Turkish (Ottoman) coins. They are happy with knowing little about the rest, 'cause the rest is not their concern.
One should go for what appeals him, one can learn about anything, but noone can be forced to like something.

Oh! I definately enjoyed the pics, its just frustrating trying to learn something new but that is also whats exciting about it so its kind of a doubled edge sword. Not only do I have to learn what the coins look like I have to try and learn a new language now (when my english still suffers a southern twang)

If you try to learn every language you are in biig trouble my friend However this is another benefit of collecting foreign coins, everyday something new, something different to learn; culture, language, history. Now I'm trying to get US commemoratives histories and the symbolism on US coins.
