This coin in my opinion is every bit XF possibly AU but has some period scratches. I've seen several straight grade with worse. Thoughts on if it would straight grade? Note: I wasn't referring to the obvious adjustment marks.

Yes those are adjustments as well as the base of the rim on the obverse bottom.

I don't think they are adjustment marks.
If they were, the scratches would only appear in the fields, but
in this case, the lettering is affected as well.

Coin blank weight adjustment marks are normally made on the blank before the coin is struck.

Are you referring to the ones on the reverse rim? If so, those are characteristic to ECU's. The scratches on the obverse at left in the field and on the bust are not. They seem very minor though just don't want to waste money if it would come back details. Thanks for the reply.

Some trivial light minor scuffs/scratches on the shoulder.

The line from his nose to the letter "D" appears to be a die crack.

Those are adjustment marks on the reverse rim at 1 o'clock, which are mild.

Should be XF-45 with a knowledgeable grader, which is rarer than the coin.

Most collectors of this coin are European and don't care about slabs.

From what I know and see of portuguese eighteenth century coinage the adjustment was made after the coin was struck. The marks will cut through the relief. France was likely to use similar process.

But I have yet to find a historical document describing this process. About how weights were adjusted.
