Hey guys,

I was at my sister's house yesterday and found this coin in her collection. We have not had a chance to weigh it yet. But I wanted to post to get everyone's thoughts. I know it's not silver because it's too shiny. It's not Steel because it did not stick to a magnet. Thoughts?

Looks like a plated cent.
The weight to two decimal points will tell.
You could tell if it was aluminum which is highly unlikely, just by holding it.
An Aluminum cent would only weigh about .9 g, about a third of a regular cent.

Thanks for your input. So plated, this would be something done outside the mint? This is not a mint error?

no not a mint mistake - the mint won't do that.
It was plated by a backyard scientist/hobbyist.
Also noted is a very nice Ridge Ring - also not an error though.

Correct, it was done by a third party after it left the mint.
No extra numismatic value, just a novelty.

With no increase in weight, I would guess it's been rubbed with mercury.

Mercury? Isn't that bad? Should be touching this thing?

You can touch it, but just don't lick your fingers.

Used to do it back in the 60s. I see no effects from doing it. Used to do it back in the 60s. I see no effects from it.
