I have a few Australian dollar coins that were stored in a PVC album and have white spots on the surface and I want them gone. However, I read somewhere that cleaning coins made of aluminium-bronze gives the coin an unnatural shine. Is this true, and if so, what should I use as a substitute?

Acetone should be harmless to your coins, whatever they're made from. However, acetone is also harmless to corrosion and oxidation. If the "white spots" are caused by a chemical reaction with the metal itself, and not just some kind of goo that's stuck to the surface of the coin, then acetone won't help.
