Wonder how well that would work on one of those encrusted Roman coins that sell for a buck or two.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

This has been experimented with since 2019 - the cleaning of contaminants from metal surfaces on coins through the use of a laser is certainly viable but at this point I would imagine would still leave as many telltale signs of the surface alteration as conventional methods meaning unless it was gradable it wouldnt even matter to attempt.

You can read about how a laser was used to clean some roman coins. Experimental study on the effect of wavelength and fluence in the laser cleaning of silvering in Late Roman coins

I find this very fascinating!
I would love to fool around with one of these laser cleaning machines. I have a number of tubes of LWC's labled "ugly" that I think would be perfect candidates for this experiment.
I'm guessing that laser cleaning a worn LWC would be akin to dipping a worn silver coin...it just wouldn't look right/correct?
I'd really be curious about the results on UNC brown LWC's?
Just me thinking out loud...
Thanks for posting ness-52!

I would love to see a microscopic image after it is cleaned. I wonder if there are any etching marks.

@Dearborn I don't think you'll need a microscope to see the damage done to it. To me it looks better right after the circular etching. After the two diagonal passes (what is that doing?) it seems to get a pinkish hue like I've seen after using vinegar and baking soda.

I do as well!

I would not do it to my coins, but it is interesting to see.
