Another post mentioned an issue I struggle with. My first love are Morgan dollars. Now that I am one Morgan away from completing and I have multiple of extra Morgan's what do I do? I will continue to buy Morgan's that I think are undervalued or strike my fancy but beyond them I have begun multiple other series but I have trouble staying focused very long. I'm currently completing unc franklins and Roosevelts because they are relatively easy and inexpensive. My favorites are more expensive but I'm chipping away at them. My priority list is: 1- Morgan's in as high grade as I can afford. 2- capped bust half's in VF or better mostly 3- Oregon trail commemoratives 4- Barber half's in fine or better 5- Franklins in unc 6- Roosevelt silver in unc 7- WW2 era walkers and mercury in unc 8- AU/unc bison nickels I have completed Peace dollars in unc (34-s is AU), Unc Eisenhower, Unc Kennedy to late 90's. Does anyone else keep a priority list? What's your list look like? Am I spread too thin? When I got close to finishing the Morgan's I panicked because I love them so much I don't want to see it end. I'm trying to put together a mostly EF/AU set as well as a f/VF in albums.

Long ago I allowed the numismatic whirlwind to consume me. Personally, I don't keep priority lists which would tend to reign me in--me being me. I'm just along for the ride and collecting what I have interests in, not striving to meet a prioritized set of goals. I do know my reply isn't very helpful.

Collecting without a goal is an accumulation. Goals are necessary to complete sets, but knowledge is the goal when trying to find deals. I have most of the classic and modern sets done in danscos, and have settled down with a single specialty. My goal list is short, sweet, and to the point: 1. Bust Halves I collect by die marriage and die state, hopefully will be able to own every marriage at one point. Only a few have completed the challenge. I am focusing on XF+ pre 1815 dates at the moment.

jacrispies - are you a member of the bust half nut club? I just started capped busts but they are beautiful and interesting. I think I have 6 or 7. I want to learn more about the die marriages. I'm also interested in VAM's for dollars.

I always created lists of what I want to get that year and I try to stick with it. Lately what I want to buy is $$$$ so I've slowed down a lot. My goals are still the same but it's lot harder buying a large US in AU/MS rather than a few circulated coins.

I've always kept lists of whatever I was collecting. I love the Excel program. I keep a master list of every coin I buy with the quantity, date of purchase and cost per coin. I also keep lists of whatever I'm collecting at the time like Libertads, Krugerrands, Swans, etc. The reason I have the individual lists is to keep from having to scroll down the main list every time I have a question about which Libertad or Britannia I need to buy next.

I collect obscure transition varieties of Barber dimes and quarters. I have a list of them all and have been checking them off, very slowly. It's oddball but I like it. For example, for the quarters there are 14 combinations, and they're all in 1900. Otherwise, I mostly collect images and knowledge.

To clarify my approach--while I don't keep lists of prioritized goals, I do keep notes which reflect what I have. There is a difference. All fun.

I collect only world coins, mostly Europe, and have four focus areas. Three of them are places in Europe which ceased striking coins by 1800; I am collecting reigns, types and mints, occasionally year runs in a type I like, and coins that can be identified to a specific year. The fourth is a theme which cuts across many places in medieval and early modern Europe.
That sounds rather broad, but it rules out pretty much all of the UK, royal France, Spain, and Scandinavia.
Within those focus areas, there are some specific targets, but I also buy what I like when I see it .

I am just starting out building a collection of American bicentennial coins. The plan is still TBD.
I have also considered building a complete set of London Bridge tokens. That's the coin that really captured my imagination when I was a kid, and honestly, that dude had to be the fun kind of crazy to buy a historic British bridge, ship it to Arizona, and reassemble it as a publicity stunt.

Quote: jacrispies - are you a member of the bust half nut club? @Pmint1 Not yet, I will be within a couple years. Finding affordable quality is a long term game. You only need 30 different marriages for an Associate's Membership too, and 100 for a full membership. Tough when I like to hoard 1814 single leafs, and they only count as one marriage! Will pick a few up at the Pittsburgh show in August. If you ever want to learn more about them or have a specific question, feel free to shoot me a message. I would recommend picking up all of the literature for them: Bust Half Fever, Overton, and Peterson.

Like Dearborn, I plan on keeping current on the modern coins I collect. Since I haven't been collecting that long I'm also working backwards. But, I'm discovering that in many cases the farther back you go the more expensive some of the coins get. It's becoming obvious that I will not get back to the first year of some of the coins I like. In regard to my personal collection I consider a "set" to be at least one coin from each year and a "complete set" to be at least one of every type of coin that was available each year. Needless to say, I won't be putting together any complete sets.

Buffalo nickels have been my primary focus for a number of years. I've been working on an AU-MS set for a few years, along with a complete major and minor variety set, just north of around 300 varieties. Will one day finish both. I usually have a circulated album in progress that I fill as I find examples. When I finish, I just start another In between Buffalo projects/goals, I just collect what appeals to me. Typically speaking, I'm building a set, but do sometimes buy at random. Large Cents, Bust halves, Morgan's, and Libertads have all been recent focuses when I hit Buffalo nickel slumps. I do at times take it a bit too far with working on too much at one time. I either have to pump the breaks temporarily in areas or redirect focus depending on cost and other variables. Ultimately, collect what you are passionate about and how you see fit. Some will not start a new album until one is finished. I tend to have multiple projects going at once.
