I love these coins. Hamburg issued standing knight gold ducats from 1811 to 1872, with a handful of varying designs.

Slabbed examples are NOT common.

You can view a combined NGC and PCGS pop report (AU50 and higher) here:
https://wondycoin.com/wondyreport/h...cat_pops.csv

This is a .csv file (comma separated values), which will open with Excel and probably any spreadsheet software, or google apps. I put this together a couple of months ago. It wasn't difficult, there are only about 300 examples graded AU50 or higher. Of those only 146 examples graded mint state.

I did a small write-up on this series a couple of years ago...
https://wondyreport.substack.com/p/...from-hamburg

There are a few dates with only a single example graded.

Well, every new coin type imitates some earlier one, but this one is particularly brazen.

However, I always appreciate the quantitative research behind your posts!

Then we can debate.

I am more drawn to the Dutch design and the history behind it. Though I appreciate the insights on what slabbed populations might portend for any type.

Poking around a little ...

There are not so many of these on the market in general. CoinArchives shows 21 sales (last 6 months), of which 4 slabbed.

Prices look to me about 50% higher than what one would pay for a common date 17th or 18th century ducat of the Dutch Republic.

My guess on why the slabbed populations are low is that the main collector market (non-US would be my guess) aren't that into slabbed coins, but instead rely on the auction house guarantees of authenticity. Along with the low mintages for these types (typically 10,000 except for the last serries).

About 18 months ago, I pulled the numbers for Dutch (single) Ducats, dates 1586 to 1817. There were 1,972 examples slabbed AU50 and higher. 530 of those are from shipwrecks. 1,165 total slabbed MS.

The numbers for Dutch 2 Ducats (standing knight, not gold off metal struck coins like the gold 6 Stuivers) is so tiny. Fewer than 75 pre-1800 examples slabbed MS. Just a hair more than slabbed MS Gold 6 Stuivers, which were at 65 total.
