This nickel weights 5.0 grams and is a brown color. The reverse has full steps.

Based on these pics, it seems that it's just environmental toning. And Full Steps is very unlikely for a circulated coin.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

@juju, remember that in order to be "full steps", not only must those steps have been fully formed during striking, but there can be no virtually circulation wear or tick marks in that area either.

Here's a quick video from PCGS that explains the 'Full Step' strike designation. The detailed information starts at the 1:05 minute mark.

I would agree with a metal detector find. In this condition, I am going with it being in the ground rather than water, as water can smooth the devices more. It was also not in circulation long after it was Minted in 1946. Us detectorists do put coin finds back in circulation, however, I do not think this is the case. Great find for condition.

note that PCGS is the only TPG to deem that hits on the steps change the quality of the strike, something PCGS inexplicably does only for the steps on Jefferson nickels, but not for full bands on dimes, nor full bell lines on Franklin halves

instead many Jefferson collectors follow the approach of Q David Bowers, who defined full steps as a measure of strike quality, something that cannot be changed after minting
