Hello everyone!

This is my first time posting here. I hope I'm using the correct forum.

My grandfather has this necklace he bought a while back at a flea market. He saw the episode on Pawn Stars about the Syracuse Decadrachm and asked me to check it out.

Fake-Syracuse-Decadrachm?
Fake-Syracuse-Decadrachm?

To my untrained eye, it looks commercially-made, especially because of the ridges on the sides (and the fact that it is a necklace), but just for the sake of my grandfather I wanted to ask here.

What do you think?

I'm totally ignorant about this field, but can't believe that's genuine.

fred, this is a modern jewelry piece, usually composed of sterling silver. A Google Lens search turned up many identical examples for sale on such sites as Etsy.

@fred, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes sorry but that cannot be a real Decadrachm of Syracuse. Here is a link for comparison to yours:

Also, when I blow up your pictures, it looks to me like there might be bronze-colored base metal underneath the silver plating. This most evident on high points and the loop. Your grandfather could bring it to a pawn shop for confirmation, but I suspect that there it isn't silver (other than perhaps the plating).

it's a modern item, probably made for the tourist market.

Can't really call this 'coin' a fake.

It is so far divergent in style and manufacture from genuine that
it could really be only deemed to be modern medal that resembles a Syracuse decadrachm.
This medal was originally made with a loop for suspension.
