Hi,

I've been going through an old coin collection my mother inherited in the 1980s (big job and huge learning curve!), and in sorting the pennies, I came across a 1961 variety with twelve sides. I can't find any information about it, and every site I've found only mentions that the edges were supposed to be smooth and the twelve sided versions didn't start until 1982. So, I am hoping someone here might have some insight. I've added photos of the coin in question next to a smooth edged 1961.

Thanks!

PMD post mint damage , someone did that to the coin on purpose and it is just worth a cent now. It's even smaller than the normal 1961 coin next to it.

You can see the ridges made by the force applied to the coin.

It has been really well made though. Someone out there will pay a few dollars just for the novelty.

Thank you, everyone, for solving the mystery and the welcome!

It stood out to me while sorting the mountain of pennies, but it never even occurred to me that someone would have modified it.

My great-uncle was quite knowledgeable based on the organization of his coin collection, but he also seemed to enjoy collecting all kinds of oddities. I guess this is a good example!
