Heritage Auctions - 1963 50C Franklin half dollar -- Struck on 5C Planchet -- MS66 PCGS. A very rare wrong planchet striking, this piece is widely off-center with the bottom of the obverse and the corresponding top of the reverse almost completely on the struck coin. The result is that the date is full and in the central part of the coin. Very lightly toned with flashy, satin-like underlying mint luster and shows no mentionable abrasions.

Amazing that something like this can occur. A 5 cent planchet had to find its way into the half dollar coining press.

Does anyone think this was an 'employee assisted' mint error?

How could you not think that? But how did it get out of the mint would be fun to know.

Why wouldn't it?

Planchets are hauled around in big rolling bins. There can easily be stragglers left in them from one move to the next.

Good point - hadn't thought of that aspect of planchet movement.

and the off center strike is to be expected as the collar is far too large to properly hold the nickel planchet properly.
