Archaz - I wondered the same thing, especially when you compare it with the 40 centavos, which has about the same price range and less than 1/10th the mintage. I can only assume that the vast majority were melted or just lost to the ages. They certainly do not come up nearly as often as they would if 8+ million of them existed today.
