Coin-Found-In-Zanzibar-Tanzania---Is-It-Real-And-Valuable-?

Greetings All,

Just inquiring regarding this coin - I was sent these pictures by a local antique dealer based in Zanzibar (Unguja) , Tanzania.I want to know if they are legitimate and of any value. I googled the coins but found no similar photos or information about this coin.

Any and all feedback would be greatly appreciated !

That is a complete fantasy coin. There have never been a Wilhelm V kaiser (German emperor) and Deutsch Ostafrika (German East Africa) did not exist in 1813.

This appears to be a fantasy piece.

There was no German East Africa in 1813.
There was no Kaiser Wilhelm V.
Kaiser WIlhelm II did not wear a beard, but did always wear his helmet on German East Africa coins.

I appears to be a portrait of King Edward VII of England.

Edit: Well, I guess we agree!

That is a great fantasy coin. It is just good enough to fool a rank beginner into investing money on the off chance it is genuine. It is a perfect illustration of a Numismatic Forgery - a worthless piece of metal crafted to be just good enough to deceive collectors that are not aware of the actual history. Sales of NF types tend to target people who are in a hurry and who are greedy enough to gamble their money on an uncertainty.

The best defense in this case is accurate historical knowledge of both the situation and the coin. It proves the old adage "Buy the book, Before the coin".

I really love this one.

Definitely not genuine.

There's no example, in my experience, of any German minted coin with a mint mark (in this case "J") as large as shown here.

Also, gave it just enough damage to make you think it's old. But the German Empire didn't come into existence until near the end of the Franco-Prussian War (January 1871) - well after 1813. And there was never a Wilhelm V.

Airportpalace Why don't you post the item on ebay as a "Fantasy coin" and refer to it as a "non-regal issue" and see what you get for bids. As long as you start it at a reasonable price you will get bids. I see it selling for a minimum of $25 as long as postage is under $10. These unknown fantasies have been bringing strong prices lately.
