Hello

New to coins

Penny Question

I see listings for "L" in Liberty touching rim or smashed by rim as an error coin?

When I look at coins this seems pretty common.

Does it add any value to the resale value of a coin ?

I am sure I have many that the "L" is pretty much gone.

Also same goes with "In God we Trust" have many of these coins where 1/3 of the letter is missing because of mis-strike.

Any value in these ?

$5 ? $50 ? a penny ?

Thank you for any input

Well it depends on the year. I can't remember off the top of my head, but some years, the design placed the 'L' against the rim. then later on it was redesigned and the L was moved away from the rim. So no , it is not an error (depending on the year or if the coin was struck MAD or slightly off center.

So, whta year are you asking about?

This was very common on LMCs in the 1960s and my understanding is the mint replaced the dies in 1969 and this was no longer the case.

The L into the rim is a result of overused dies. Very common. The devices migrate toward the rim as dies are used.
