I posted this one years ago but I can't remember if it was considered full steps or not. I'm putting it in a newer 2x2 holder and would like to label it appropriately. Any input on grade would be appreciated.

Nice coin for sure! Much larger closeup needed to evaluate steps.

I agree, need close up picture. Either way, it is a very nice coin.

Virtually all 1990s nickels were struck with full steps. It's mostly the older ones where full steps were valuable, and it varies by year.

Great off-center error!

The coin looks to be full step, but most modern off-center or broadstruck Jefferson nickels are Full Step or very close to it. The lack of a collar allows the dies to go deeper into the planchet and increases the design details on the coin.

Here's a post from a couple of years ago where I asked the same question about a broadstruck 1999 Jefferson nickel. http://goccf.com/t/382158.

Mike Diamond replied to the question with the following:

Quote:
A planchet that is confined by the collar is pretty much incompressible, apart from the plastic flow that forces coin metal into the die's recesses. The resistance provided by that incompressible disc interrupts the descent of the hammer die, often before coin metal has fully occupied the dies' recesses. When a planchet is struck out of collar, resistance is far lower, allowing the hammer die to sink more deeply into the planchet which, in turn, allows the coin metal to fully occupy the dies' recesses. That's why full steps is no big deal in a coin struck out-of-collar.

Nice off center nickel Thats also good info Yokozuna (and Mike). The grading service still grades and labels full steps on off center nickels despite that. (Example: https://www.apmex.com/product/93062...-off-center) NGC Full Steps info: https://www.ngccoin.com/news/articl...eps-nickels/

So the original question for labeling is a good one. However it makes me think of a different question. While Mike says That's why full steps is no big deal in a coin struck out-of-collar, I wonder whether that info is actually used in the marketplace for error coin buys since people are 'trained' to know full steps is a higher value. Is there any value increase for sold coins having an off-center Jefferson nickel with full steps with similar percentage of the strike missing and including date or not? And to take that further, would a nickel with being off center say 35-50% but designated as having full steps be more valuable when sold in the marketplace than a 60-70% off center nickel without full steps (if that is possible with the info mike gave being they are more likely full steps). I guess someone can look at sold values to investigate because according to mike it sounds like it wouldnt really matter if it had fs or not on the label and to not judge it favorable if it is.

Thank you everyone for the comments and information. I tried to get a better picture of the steps but with current set up I have it just wasn't possible. It's one of my favorite off centers I have. Again thanks everyone
