Dear community

I am located in Thailand and I see Morgan dollars around quite a lot. Now I am wondering how I can find out if they are real or fake. Can you please give me some hints?

Be careful with this stuff.

First, I don't see any Morgan dollars in that photo. But I do see some of those Chinese Fat Man Dollars.

Here's an example of (I assume) a genuine one:

I actually own several counterfeit Chinese coins that I bought at a flea market in Amsterdam. I did so knowing that I was taking a risk but I wanted to analyze these things and learn more about counterfeits.

Here's what I learned:

--Almost all of them are light (approx 20-25 grams)
--Almost all of them are magentic

We can't be an expert on every coin out there but you can at least learn the correct weight for a coin and take a cheap magnet with you when you go shopping.

Good luck.

I see a handful of Trade dollars. That alone raises my suspicions.

Where in Thailand? If in BKK, you can pretty much figure anything at the weekend Chatuchak market is fake. Hold a real one in one hand and the coin in question in the other hand. You'll notice the difference in weight. Rust on the coin is another dead giveaway.

There may be a couple of reputable coin dealers in BKK. If you find any, could you post their locations here for those of us who visit Thailand?

Firstly, to our forums!
And with the others. I see stacks of coins here which are commonly reproduced--and these all have similar surface qualities.
The fakes are getting better, and I think the only way to know is to really study one coin series to collect--and learn the minute details.

WAIT!!! WATCH OUT!!

The dealer might say hey, the real one is mine, and you're trying to rip me off by giving me a fake one.

These coins are all over the flea markets of Malaysia, Thailand, Hong kong, Vietnam etc. These are not modern fake but old fake coins, which does not mean contemporary counterfeit.
