Hi Cole. Well I think it's pretty special because your grandpa gave it to you. I have a 1923 Peace dollar that belonged to my grandmother and that one is pretty special to me. But your Morgan looks to be in pretty good shape for being 130 years old. ;) I'd give it a grade of XF40. It might pull an XF45 in better focus but it's hard to say. Wholesale price on that would be about $25. Hope that helps. [EDIT: Oops. I just realized you posted this in the VAM forum and you're probably looking for advice on VAMs. In addition to what I wrote above I'd suggest checking out this site: http://www.vamworld.com/1879-P+VAMs and get yourself a good loupe (magnifying glass) and have a look for yourself. I don't think those photos will reveal much in the way of VAMs. Good luck!]

Of course it's special. It's a Morgan. Most 1879-P Morgan VAM's concern date doubling. This is one of those dates for which atribution is difficult; there are no "significant" 1879-P VAM's and research has lagged as a result. It's necessary for you to go over the date with a fine tooth comb, record what you get and compare it to available VAMworld information.

alright, thanks guys, I hate selling things, especially when they're given to me and I'm new to morgans and was just wondering if it had anything special VAM wise. Thanks for the links and info! I'm really starting to like these coins, and am looking forward to getting more and learning more about them! -thanks again!

Those are great pictures.
I should hire you to catalog my coins.
:)
So after looking at those I'll pretty much stick to my grade but call the obverse XF45 (because of nice cotton balls) but the reverse I'll give an XF40 due to wear on breast feathers and legs.
Just my amateur opinion. Good luck with your new collection.

Haha thanks guys, and zerozero, I gotta tell you, i'd love to have a job like that! And it's really nice not having to squint through a loop to look at coins. Oh and that thread on advice on taking pictures was a major help! now I can't wait to start a morgan collection. They don't seem that expensive and seems not everybody knows that much about VAMS, so maybe once I learn a bit more I can get some nice steals

Fantastic pictures Cole. Hard to tell if there is doubling on the lower cross bar of the 1. Everything else seem to be normal. Open 9 variety, possible VAM 2 if no doubling can be found.
