Pretty much what the title says. In my early coin roll hunting days I never really focused too much on varieties. Now as I dive deeper I've picked up a decent microscope... and I've always had a copy of the CherryPickers' Guide sitting on a shelf I've thumbed through.

So yeah, rather than just sort through the rolls separating copper from non-copper, looking for Indian Head cents and the occasional Proof or coin in remarkably good condition considering it is circulated... wondering what everyone else focuses on for die varieties as inspiration.

Reading through the forums here and there, I usually recommend to those new to focus first on looking up the coin in a book like strike it rich with pocket change 5th edition to see if a doubled die or other variety/error thats worthwhile exists for that coin. The book contains the main ones but not all the obscure ones that may be more difficult to identify for newcomers and/or may not have much value and therefore you spend a lot of time for minimal return other than learning of course. This may help you and others to not look at every coin and go AHA! because many of those might be Machine Doubling or some type of post mint damage that isn't really valuable enough to search out since many have trouble knowing Machine Doubling vs a doubled die for example. Also many will burn out fast trying to look up every variety for every coin which takes a lot of time.

Of course as you improve, you can add those in CherryPickers Guide which a new 6th edition vol II is coming out at a reasonable cost and can be pre ordered it appears now on whitman https://whitman.com/cherrypickers-g...6th-edition/ Still waiting to hear if Vol I 6th edition will be reprinted or not. Its good you may have that one as its too expensive to buy second hand at the moment other than a 5th edition kindle digital version on Amazon.

Or as john1 mentioned, for free as well as added info you can use the websites but are targeted more for experienced searchers in my opinion. One helpful part will typically show both the image of the doubling plus any additional markers to help confirm it that you should be able to find on the coin itself. Or to look up a specific coin you think is something but not in the book. If at that point you are still not sure if you found it you can always post on this forum once you learn how to post photos to ask prior to sending it for confirmationor a grading company as that costs money to different degrees.

I basically just look for the obvious varieties: 1955, 1972, and 1995 DDOs. More interesting to me are errors like a 1983 copper cent, or mules like the 1992 Close AM or 1988-2000 Wide AM cents.
