Thanks to Hondo Boguss, it's clearly counterfeit!

The big thing I noticed is the orientation is 180 degrees off which I cannot show in a photo yet unlike my other 1/5 Sols around this date, it's supposed to be oriented where you flip it vertically to see the coin in the correct orientation. This coin must be flipped horizontally, hence, 180 degrees off in Obv/Rev orientation.

2nd, the Obv seems to have a die crack between the 8 and 9 of the date. I have a closer photo but have to wait until tomorrow to use the free optimizer to get the file under 300K.

3rd the Rev seems to be a week strike or wax in the die. Two clear indications are the missing o that should be to the right of the 5 on the bottom before DE SOL and on the top of the coin, the hair of the woman is missing some bulk.

I've rated the coin a general VF rating for now yet these errors would seem to be valuable to the right collector.

Any thoughts? And thanks!

Here's info on the coin showing the proper orientation and very surprised I noticed this.

Bluevase, are you sure that this coin is authentic? There seem to be quite a few variances between it and the one posted on Numista. The weight would be a good clue.

Hmmm Hondo Boguss, good idea.

So, it is in the poorest condition YET, out of the cited 5g, it weighs 4.34g as a VF1897 and my XF1895 weighs 4.93 and my AU1896 weighs 4.95.

I think you nailed it! It must be a counterfeit! First time I've run into this yet all my other Error coins were all US coins and never so broadly in error.

You would think a counterfeiter would at least orient it properly yet .. this is from the late 1800s!

I'll characterize it as a counterfeit! And, I've re-learned to add weight as a factor! Thanks!

It probably has some value as a possible contemporary circulating counterfeit, if that is any consolation. Hopefully you're not out too much on this one. But if you collect Peru 1/5 sols, it makes an interesting addition to your collection.
