Here's a medal I picked up dirt cheap at an antique shop yesterday. I wasn't able to find much on my google searches other than a link to a post on another coin forum from 2008 and no replies. I'll post a copy of that old post below. I couldn't find any sales history for this medal.....anyone have any idea what it may be worth? It's gotta be worth more than the $3 I paid. LoL

Here's the text from that 2008 post I found:

1833, 48mm Bronze by William Wyon.

This is the description from the book & the Link: Google Book:A Memoir of the Life and Works of William Wyon.

MILL HILL SCHOOL.

Obverse. — A Classical Male figure, gracefully robed, erect, with

a Scroll of paper at his feet, — resting his left hand

upon a book, and with his right arm and hand extended,

pouring out of an Ewer, the oil of instruction

into an antique Lamp, which is presented with affectionate

humility by a Youth dressed in a Tunick, — between

the two figures is an Altar, upon which is a

chaplet of Laurel, and on the centre, a wreath of

Laurel, encircling the words, " Hoc ALTERNA FIDES," —

beneath, W. WYON, A. R. A.

Reverse. — Within a wreath of Palm and Laurel is inscribed, "

SCHOLAE COLL. MOL. ALVMNVS CONDISCIPVLORVM

VETERVM SVFFRAGIIS PRAEMIVM TVLIT."

Good luck with that one, qktbird! Evidently I'm going to the wrong antique stores.

I think I just got lucky at the antique shop this time. There was a binder with a bunch of masonic tokens and a bunch of other odds & ends mixed in but only a few tokens had prices on them. I asked about pricing and the dealer said $3 for anything that didn't have a price. I bought up just about everything except for the tax and transit tokens. There were a few that had $4 to $12 prices and may have been a little overpriced, but I figured some of the $3 tokens/medals would more than cover the difference.

Absolutely is worth more than $3.00 I don't have any real hard evidence to back that up, but every medal or token I've seen from Wyon has sold for 80+ British pounds or at least $100.00 or more. He made some of the most desirable Conder tokens in the 18th century Birmingham, England.

One I'm actively looking for I just turned down a copy for $600 becuase I want a better copy, and then I had second thoughts - but too late it sold about a minute after my first refusal. DOH!

For anyone wondering it it is I'm looking for. It's a penny featuring St. Michael's Church in Coventry, Warwickshire, Great Britain. AKA D&H-38a

This is similar to the copy I turned down except the one I saw was raw and not certified. I want a bit cleaner surfaces, more proof like and no rim dings or stains.

The description of the medal seems to match, except yours doesn't appear to be bronze - unless the lighting in your photos is way off, or it's a black-and-white picture. It may be a pewter example, or it may be silver-plated.

The Latin translates to (I think): Mill Hill School Students Association, Senior Vote, Prize Winner

Medals like this were often engraved by the winners - there doesn't seem to be any engraving on the front or back, is there anything engraved in the edge?

Finally, the school was established in 1807 and still exists, in the suburb of Mill Hill on the affluent outskirts of London. Wikipedia. Their website. British private schools are generally good record-keepers. You could try contacting them, to find out when such medals were being awarded.

Westcoin - Thanks for the info and sharing the photo. That's a really nice looking piece! I tried searching William Wyon on ebay and the prices were all over the place. One would be $19 and another medal over $1000 so I have no idea what this one might be worth. I'll probably list it on ebay next weekend.....I used up all my free listings for this month so I have to wait. I wanted to do a little research too so I have an idea where to start the bid.

Sap - I don't know why my photo's turn out with messed up color sometimes. In person, it's a nice looking light chocolate color and looks really nice. I tried taking better photo's and these look a much better. I completely forgot to look at the edge on it too. When I took new photo's, I found that it has the letters "DSP" stamped on the edge. Thanks for reminding me to look there and all the other helpful tips!
