I was think are estate and yard sells or swap meets worth going to start since spring is here and going to be starting. So what I wanted to know was do you think they are worth going to find coins at. Has anyone here found coins at estate sale or yard sale Or are they a waste of time going to. Also is it far to buy a large group of coins for cheap if you know there value and the person selling them is does not. Or should you let them know what they are selling has alot of value. I know I have a few questian in this one so answer the ones you want. Main thing I want to know should I be looking for estate sale

What you usually find at estate sells are family members willing to pay astronomical amounts of money to keep collectables in the family. They don't care about actual worth but do care about sentimental value so price is NOT an object. I have NEVER had any luck at estate sells (auctions). Also if you are buying or attempting to buy at such a sale you are not obligated to forward information (knowledge) concerning said coins actual value. Wish you luck.

You have to be very lucky to pick anything worthwhile at one of these. I have only been lucky once at a local weekend market I picked up a nice looking 1925 penny for 1 dollar. (aussie penny) Most of the people who sell at these know what the value of an article is and therefore they want there pound of flesh. But then.....you could be lucky!

I know a few collectors who regularly cruise all the garage sales and flea markets they can find, but their collecting interests are very broad - not just coins, but medals, badges, pot lids and all sorts of other stuff. Those folks usually manage to find something that interests them. The "coin only" people rarely find much.

I always ask at yard sales if they have any coins !!! most folks dont even think about them until then,, I have bought Morgans ,Kennedy 90 and 40% silver halves, nearly complete Lincoln Cent collections, Nearly complete Jefferson nickle collections, and have gotten information on other coins which I was able to buy after contacting the other family Members . I have yet to have any luck but an acquatance found a 1894 Plain Morgan at a small estate sale with a small amount of coins. Only him and one other person knew it was in there... even with that he still bought it the lot at under half of greysheet of the 94 Plain...
So the deals are out there... just need to find them.

I have found common coins at yard sales such as worn out Buffalo nickels and the occasional jar of wheaties.......most of the time coins are investigated pretty thouroughly before they hit the table for sale.......I did luck out one time though......an older gentelman had been a novice dealer and had grown tired of it......he still had some decent items left in his yard sale when I arrived.......such as a whole roll of uncirculated silver eagles I was able to obtain for less than the price of silver melt........the man knew the recent prices but just want to get rid of them.....I ended up with all of his leftover items for one price......

I haven't looked around much at yard sales, but when I have, I haven't found anything of use. Yard sales usually consist of junk that people should just throw away. Swap meets are a little better, but you have to know what you are doing since there are a lot of scam artists there. Gun shows (essentially glorified swap meets with a gun theme) sometimes have people dealing in coins and medals, but I haven't found any great deals there. However, at the recurring gun show I sometimes go to, there is a dealer who has a lot of interesting (non-coin-related) books. Antique shows sometimes have coins, but typically no great deals will be found there.

Ask Bobby1313, I'd be willing to bet he would say they are "good".

Yeah, up until today, I would have said that most "estate", yard, flea, lawn, and garage sales were mostly a waste of time and money. Guess I'll have to reevaluate this opinion. Fred
