I was wondering what your thoughts on coin cleaning are:

I would not clean copper or nickel coins, but I wanted to use this coin dip product called "Unitrade" (that contains phosphoric acid) on some silver dollars that I have that have turned black. My local coin dealer gave me a demostration on a 1967 dollar and it was amazing, but I concerned about long term affects on the coin.

personally , I think that toned , tarnish on a coin is beautiful ! with marks and toning, you can figure some history on coins. My opinion , don't clean your silver dollar. If you want to sell them let me know but if you want MS coin without toning buy them certified...don't clean them...

If it's "junk" silver and you want it shiny, why not.

Anything else loses value with a cleaning. However, certain stuff(like tape residue, etc) should be cleaned off with acetone as described in numerous threads on this site.

I think cleaning a naturally tarnished coin would be frowned upon by most(if not all) collectors... and diminish the value. But they are your coins and it's still a free country.

To me it depends what is on a coin. I have seen copper, silver and nickel coins that have been mildly to badly damaged/corroded by whatever was on them. Sometimes the stuff on a coin needs to be removed asap. A nicely toned coin is different though.
