I have two tokens from the Troy Laundry Co. Ltd. Most likely they are return receipts for the pick-up of laundry, as there is no value on them. One has the address 204* Bourbon St. while the other has the address of 118 St. Charles St. Both of these streets are instantly recognizable to anyone who has visited New Orleans, yet the only Troy Laundry in NOLA I could find was located in the 400 block of N. Rampart in the late 1800s. Both are 28.8 mm, brass, and 5.92 g / 6.00 g respectively. There are records of Troy Laundry Co. in many cities, from Troy NY, Seattle, Portland, Atlanta, and San Jose. However, there are no listings on tokencatalog or in Crawford and Farber, Louisiana Trade Tokens 2nd Ed. As such, I'm at a loss to attribute these. Many thanks if you can help me out! Update: Rulau has a token as such listed from "9 St. Charles St." but without the Ltd. in the title (Rulau Try9). Is there / was there a Bourbon Street in Troy, NY? *Note: the 2 in this address has been repunched, as evidenced by the bulge on the reverse. jbuck, I just amended my post after pulling out my copy of Rulau. The second is very similar to Rulau Try9, with the exception of Ltd. in the name.

I would consider this a "claim check" rather than a "trade token", a type of item with no monetary value or quasi-monetary function as such. Hat check tokens are similar. And I suspect that such items are much less well catalogued than trade tokens (which themselves have only spotty coverage).

publius, that's exactly what I'm finding out. Hopefully the addresses will help me to solve this riddle.

Update: I contacted the Rensselaer County & Troy City Historian with the Hart Cluett Museum of Historic Rensselaer County (Troy, NY). They stated that there was not a Bourbon Street in Troy NY in that time period. As such, I do not think that they are from that city. My search continues.

Hi - this is New Orleans. From newspapers - the first with the 113 St. Charles St. address is from 1910 and the 204 Bourbon St. is from 1924.

Brummagem, thank you for this information! Can you tell me the source of this information so that I can create listings on tokencatalog.com?

certainly :) The ads ran multiple times in these newspapers - the scans are from the June 13 1910 Times-Democrat (New Orleans) and the January 10 1924 West Bank Herald (Algiers).

My profound and profuse thanks to you, Brummagem! These two tokens had been confounding me, and you have provided the data needed for attribution.
