i posted this scanned image along with a question last week. there were only a few replys, and the opinion was the coins are " Struck Through Grease". so the continuation of the question is, when this occurs - " Struck Through Grease", how many coins can be affected. the point being, I looked through approx. 200, 1995P cents. I found approx. 30 with the identical condition. namely the bottom of the "S" in states, the bottom of "OF" and the bottom of the "A" in AMERICA, all look "shaved" almost level with the field of the coin. in every case - without exception the top of the memorial building seems to have a "shaved" look in the top of the building, about the 4th - 6th, loops in the banner and also continuing onto the next lower tier of the building. ALL of the coins have the same look, in the same area. all of the coins are high BU - to AU condition, so wear shouldn't be the cause. is this still typical of " Struck Through Grease". how many coins could be affected with this same "problem" photo re-posted. thanks

dbrablec, I don't believe this actually Struck Through Grease, but more like the incuse areas of the die partially filling with grease and dirt. If nothing is done to clean out these areas, this die could possible produce thousands of coins with with the same feature.

The other thing to point out is that the bottom of the bust of Lincoln on the obverse matches up with the STATES OF AME....area of the coins reverse.

As the coin is being struck, it often happens the the letters of that area do not strike up well. This is because more metal is needed during the strike to fill in the bottom of the bust on the obverse and the letters of STATES oF AME....on the reverse simultaneously.

The result is often a weak look to the Letters on that part of the reverse. This has happened for every year of Lincoln Memorial cent. It is extremely common and adds no value to the coin. In fact, it would lessen the grade of a BU coin since the strike is poor.

Thanks,
Bill
