I usually rummage through the foreign coins bin at a LCS looking for anything that looks like silver. This turned out to be so. Other than that, I don,t know much more.
Is there any numismatic value here over melt?

I would say yes - it is worth more than melt. Krause says 3 million were made and has a value of $15 for VF and $30 at EF - I would say yours is in between the two grades. I would also guess a real value today is about half of the catalog. At .0145 oz of silver an $25 per ounce it is only worth 35 cents or so as silver. Nice find!
Yours is nicer than this one on ebay - lets see what is sells for.

Have these ever been known to be counterfeits?

I have no idea but with so little silver, and a relatively small denomination, I don't see why they would be a candidate for a counterfeiter. Just my best guess.

Wow, IndianGE,that is a generous bump over Jwobbilie.
I am not sure I agree on your assessment as AU50, based solely on those well worn rims. The interior seems to remain nice strike with the design well defined. IMO, with a well defined rim, it might have made 60-61.
Concerning the details designation, would conservation be a consideration? I have seen many silver coins straight graded with as much or more discoloration than this. Even though the silver content is low, would this not be considered natural toning to the surface, albeit, somewhat undesirable. Would conservation efforts result in surface pitting as is with Verdigris and copper. Is this corrosion other than natural exposure to the elements?
I cannot progress without asking questions. Sorry.
Feedback is knowledge.
I am intrigued by the symbolic elements and detail. I endeavor to understand them to become more knowledable in the Empire in the times preceding " The Great War". It might help to better understand what is happening today.

The rims aren't worn like that. That is the way it came from the mint. Your coin has very little wear on all the high points. The crowns on obverse and reverse, the eagle, the shield in the center, all details are sharp and defined. I stand by my AU-50 grade with details for the corrosion.
