Can silver coins be worn down if they have good detail but cleaned in the fields to straight grade at a lower number? Or can this only be done through handling?

Hypothetically, the best way would be to naturally wear it down by keeping it in your pocket and handling it. I would generally not recommend that.

I've known experts (like Jess Lipka) who could work wonders on cleaned coins, but I'm sure their tecnhiques are closely guarded.

I agree that pantpocket shine is the best "cleaning/aging" technique but the drawback is that it does wear the coin a bit. It is hard to argue that pocket shine is not natural wear for a coin since that is where a lot of coins spend some time.

Hmmmm. Would a straight grade at a lower level increase the value over a "Details - cleaned" designation of a more highly graded coin?

Truth be told, any US 90% silver coin can be retoned to just about any color you like, and many are encapsulated in no-comment third party graded holders afterwards

Pics would help, but in general I bet collectors would much rather have a straight-grade VF than a EF-Details, so I say toss it in your pocket and bounce it around for a decade or so!

What I found by experimenting with toothpaste and polishing compound on the silver half dollar is that I at least could not do it. Any abrasion on the surfaces just creates patches of harsh cleaning not the type of wear you would want to get the coin to an acceptable look.
