That;s weird I never seen that type of object before shaped liked that. I don;t think it;s a strike thru or a die chip or a die gouge weird wait for other opinions on this not sure.

If you look at it just right,it kinda looks like the bottom left side of the steps but I am going to guess a die gouge.

It appears to be some type of scrape on the die

Thanks for the responses so far!

John1:

You might be right- Here are 3 more pictures in different positions.

It might be a die clash from the base of the Memorial/Urns/etc under the lower part of the 4 and the lines above the 4 are steps.

Chuck, when clashing, the top of the building is closest to the date and does not extend far enough to effect the last digits. Appears to be die damage.

I don't think it is a clash for two reasons. first the location is not right and second the lines are curved not straight like the stairs. What I think you might have here is a coin struck just after an in internal die break occured. the stria in the break have not yet been worn down by repeated strikes. This is just my opinion and I await the opinions of others

Die gouge. When a micro photo is looked at you have to realize the size of the gouge is very small in relation to the 4 digit.

Hi Coop;

Multiple die gouges above the 4 and a single die gouge at the base of the 4?

They all happened at one time. Perhaps a glancing blow and movement of metal. They are definite in shape unlike a die that is wearing. I did note that the one through the 4 didn't look straight. But dropping in to a portion of the device it may have changed the line a little at the bottom.
I've found nice die gouges before and even found one with a variety on it.

Interesting you can see a gouge on the right side of the mint mark and die wear on the one on the left side of the mint mark. Must have been something common at that time? But if it gets listed, then it would serve as a marker for that die state.
Other things that happen during the minting process:
