This, of course, is old news for seasoned coin collectors but it still seems a bit overboard to me.
In 2009, unless something really goes wrong, our mint will produce and distribute 62 different coins not counting any commemoratives. The number includes business strikes, proofs and silver proofs of all denominations from the cent to the dollar.
By comparison, the mint produced a total of only 6 coins in 1922. One cent, the 22D, 4 Peace dollars (including the elusive 1922 proof with a universe of 10 coins) and one $20 gold coin.
Keep those orders for mint and proof sets coming in folks, it is good for the economy!

That byline should read:
"2009 Stimulus Package for the U.S. Mint"

How about 1933? Four varieties issued for circulation: Two varieties of One Cent (Philly, Denver), the 1933-S Walking Liberty Half-Dollar, and the 1933-P $10 Gold Eagle.

Ironically, there are now more of the unissued 1933 $20 Double Eagles known to exist than the issued 1922 Proof Peace dollar, although only one of the '33's can be legally held by a private owner....

When I started collecting (mainly foreign coins) way back all those years, there was nothing in circulation except the standard coins. There had been nothing since the Carver commemorative half.

When I think of the silver I carried around in my pocket, it makes me wish I had collected U.S. instead of foreign.

Anyway, we have gone from one extreme to the other. I can't afford what the mint is offering nowadays.
