To me this looks like a VG10 on the obverse but I'm a little concerned about the fine scratches. Are they evidence of cleaning or anything of concern?

The image of the reverse is blurred (not my image) but looks like it could squeek into a 10 but probably an 8.

Extra Credit In general, Barber halves seem to wear more on the reverse than the obverse. What comes into consideration when assigning a final grade for the those coin?

Your advice is highly valued!. Thanks in advance!

Obverse VG10, rev VG8. My net grade VG10 details, cleaned. Obverse shows lots of hairlines from the cleaning.

A better date and mintmark, but unless you really need one, I'd hold out for a problem-free example (although that's going to carry a premium!)

Is this a fair pic of the obverse, with the right side so much lighter than the left side?

with paralyse spot on The photos are not good from the seller I think the lighting is just off, white balance on camera seems to be the same on both sides, just uneven lighting.

Obverse definitely appears to be cleaned. Not enough of LIBERTY present for VG-10 to me. VG-08 Details Cleaned

when you have a coin that has disparate amount of wear on the two sides one must look first at strike as the culprit. there are two schools of thought. one is to net grade the coin and the other is the go with the lower of the two. weak strikes on these is quite common especially the reverse

I'm going to throw something out here that others may not agree with. if you block out everything on this coin just looking at the sharpness of the lettering, date, motto and talon definition I'm seeing a weaker struck VF coin. some of the devices are just too sharp for VG. what would a TPG grade this one? probably VG10 details (cleaned)

man now thats a VG10 all day long check out that detail left on the Laurel and hair curl, on reverse pics blurry but that shield looks F-12 territory. ANACS is the fix for these better dates to settle the matter...knee jerk cleaned opinions abound on Barber Halfs I sometimes encounter G-6 - VG pocket shine Halfs with those scratches that really aren't scratches but chatter from other silver coins and they come back in TPG slabs straight graded. Lots of open areas on a Half Dollar for chatter.
On a 1904 S with fine details I would need better pics of rims obverse rev upside down and sideways before I would smash the PayPal button these get pricey above VG-8.
