I ran across this YouTube video tonight. These guys make their own coins and medals, and they give some in-depth looks at making tooling.

Making dies:

Around 15:40, the machinist starts talking about why blank dies have a slightly conical shape. It's to reduce force during hubbing. Interesting because we were just talking about single squeeze hubbing at the US Mint.

I thought it was pretty cool that they actually minted the original Jefferson nickel design by Felix Schlag. It looks phenomenal in 24k.

Still working my way through the other minting videos, but so far they are really interesting!
