Russia often is spoken of as the third Rome, and the Pax Romana or Peace of Rome is mirrored in the Russkiy Mir, Russian World but also Peace of Russia and they seem to be pulling from history in that sentiment. Well Vespasian's march to Rome seems to be analogous to the Wagner leader heading to Moscow. Of course that victory over Vitellius was very fast and we live in a much more dangerous time with today's weapons. Even Putin likened this to 1917 but it feels like a general crossing into Rome more to me and that is not the Red Army he is leading. It is good to study history as we do dealing with ancient coins.

Vespasian was hardly the first, or last, victorious Roman general to stage a coup. It happened so often in Roman/Byzantine history that one could declare such military Darwinism to be standard imperial practice. Certainly most semi-competent emperors always made sure their successful, popular generals were kept on a short leash, for this reason.

I have always thought that the Roman-style "good old days", of victorious generals marching back to the imperial capital to stage a coup, were long past. The Russians have proven that I was mistaken in this belief. Of course, two years ago, I also believed that the days of European countries openly invading each other for a territorial land-grab were long over, too. In this, the Russians continue to surprise, and I doubt the surprises out of Russia have finished.

The "Third Rome" doctrine is, of course, believed and promulgated in Russia and the Russian diaspora, and nowhere else. I do not know if Putin himself believes it (coming as he does from an anti-Tsarist, anti-religious KGB background), but many of his backers do, including the Patriarch.

Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Increasingly, I find myself equating Putin's character and personality to that of Stalin, Hitler or Genghis Khan, - life is expendable.
Dads, moms and their children just don't matter.

I find it hard to pull Vespasian down to their level.
Traditionally, the Romans had high regard for family, and that should? include Vespasian.
