to the CCF

There are Cu-Ni clad dimes with the clad layer missing that do in fact appear as copper dimes. We'll need in-focus photos and an accurate weight to help you determine what you have.

Yes, an accurate weight--to two decimal places--would be good to know. Thanks.

Hello and welcome.

Just be aware, the vast majority of "copper" dimes, nickels and quarters we've seen on the forum before are merely stained brown, due to environmental damage (having been buried in acidic soil, or tossed into a chlorinated fountain and left there for several weeks). The next most likely explanation, especially if the coin is bright shiny copper in appearance but otherwise looks the same and weighs the same as a normal dime, is "someone fooling around with a chemistry set", rather than an actual mint error. Here are some threads with examples:

I'm not saying you don't have something rare and interesting; just that it's not very probable. And without pictures, probability is all we can offer you.

Clear pictures of both the obverse and reverse of the coin and an accurate weight are essential to be given any advice. If you don't have a scale, you can purchase an inexpensive digital scale on Amazon for under $20 which is accurate to 0.01 grams.

As mentioned, by far the most common thing which will make a dime look copper is environmental damage. If you search on "copper dime" in this forum you'll find many examples of these.

Regarding mint-issued errors, a missing clad layer would result in an underweight coin, and most likely it would only be copper on one side.
I have seen one PCGS example of a dime struck on a foreign copper planchet, but something like that would be an incredibly rare find even to come across a single example.
