I've been a coin collector for years, through a lot of my childhood, but over the last few years I've wanted to get more in depth into the strategy of numismatics and be able to identify rarities. Anyway, my question is this: are the bank rolls of Presidential dollars from the mint ( the ones wrapped in the red-white-blue flag-like paper ) different than the ones you can buy directly from the bank? I purchased a few Harrison rolls from my credit union the other day and the ends of the roll had finger prints (expected) and I noticed a pretty good nick on the end facing coin. The two end coins would be excluded from any sets, and who knows what condition the other 23 are in. I just can't justify spending the extra 16 bucks or whatever it is to buy the flag wrapped rolls from the mint unless those coins are really in that much better condition than rolls from the bank. I'd be curious to know what your experiences are with this?

The coins sold in rolls by the US Mint for a premium are handled in the same manner as the coins available at a bank, which is to say not very gently. The US Mint does not even roll the coins themselves, it is done by a contractor. The premium value is all in the paper wrapper which is probably a bit speculative. Of course, this is the only source for both P and D issues for some people. Around here, eastcoasters and westcoasters just do swap trades to get both Mints

Welcome to the forum.

To answer your first question, all the coins go to the same place to be wrapped. If you buy from the mint directly, you are paying the premium for the fancy paper and the shipping. The rolls you get from your credit union originated from the same place.

As for damage to the coins you get in the rolls, the same holds true for coins purchased from the mint. There may be less nicks or fingerprints because they are going through fewer hands. If you think about the bank itself, more than one teller may be holding the roll before you get it.

My advice to you is to save the 16 dollars and get the coins through your credit union.
