Well, I think I'm going to withdraw this one for now. Under much more controlled lighting conditions and a repeatable setup, the difference does not seem so great between 87, 91, 90, 90. I think that last snapshot was catching a lot of reflection from the field, which made the letters seem much puffier than they actually are. I don't know why that effect happened so strongly with the one 1990-S set, but it could be as simple as the distance variation between the plastic and the coin causing a focus difference. Earlier I also had to reposition the light manually each time, so maybe on that set of pictures I had it at a slightly different angle causing more glare into the scope.
Back to the hunt, it would seem. =)
