Guys, I am stuck on research materials. In reviewing the NGC Variety Plus site, they have a listing for the 1990-S proof half dollar. It's a NGC V-001, but they don't supply a complete reference image, just fragments. The only other attribution is a CONECA DDO-001. As far as I can tell, the CONECA site is under reconstruction, and only cents and nickels are currently posted. I checked Variety Vista, but I'm not sure if their DDO-001 listing for 1990-S PF is actually the same coin or not (and there is no cross reference of other attributions). There are no examples listed for sale on Brian's coins, nor is there a Wexler entry.

I can't find a set of reference images anywhere on Google.

The only thing I can say is that the two 1990 coins I have are slightly different from each other. However, both have IGWT that is way fatter than 1987 and 1991 (the closest mint sets I have). But without actual attribution materials, I have no way of knowing if that was normal for 1990-S 50¢ PF, or whether I have something interesting here.

So where do I go from here?

P.S. In case anyone with a laser sharp memory was going to ask: both the proof cents have the S mint mark. =)

I did pull up a standard reference for 1989, 1990, 1991 from PCGS CoinFacts. I feel like even there, the 1990 has a slightly thicker IGWT than 1989 or 1991, although it is nowhere near as thick as the two in my proof sets.

I will take some quality pictures tonight. However, I imagine that it will be challenging to attribute them without any attribution reference images.

Pushed a quick trio through the resizing app. I will have better images later when I can work with proper lighting and setup. Here is the TRUST from the mint set '87, '91, and then the '90 that I think is a candidate for the DDO.

Well, I think I'm going to withdraw this one for now. Under much more controlled lighting conditions and a repeatable setup, the difference does not seem so great between 87, 91, 90, 90. I think that last snapshot was catching a lot of reflection from the field, which made the letters seem much puffier than they actually are. I don't know why that effect happened so strongly with the one 1990-S set, but it could be as simple as the distance variation between the plastic and the coin causing a focus difference. Earlier I also had to reposition the light manually each time, so maybe on that set of pictures I had it at a slightly different angle causing more glare into the scope.

Back to the hunt, it would seem. =)

I don't think the photo of the 90S you show is the CONECA listed 90S DDO-001. What I know about the CONECA listed 90S DDO-001 is...a friend of mine, a few years ago, found a 90S DDO and Wiles listed it in the CONECA Master Listings as the 90S DDO-001, and also put it on Variety Vista. I then searched 5 rolls of 90S proofs and found three of the newly listed DDO-001's. I have been waiting for someone to add it to the CPG and give it an FS number, hasn't happened. Attached are two photos of the CONECA listed 90S DDO-001.

Yeah, you can really see the separation on the S in your pictures.
