Hi all,

I have a token or medal that has me stumped. It is metallic and non-magnetic. 32mm diameter. I don't have access to fine scales at present so can't provide a weight. I think there's a seal with a ball on it's nose.
Many thanks

The mosque on the obverse (?) is the Grand Mosque in Mecca; the objects in the foreground are the Kaaba and other pilgrimage features within the mosque.

On the other side we have some "Islamic numerology". The central feature is the number "786", written in Urdu, one of the Indian numeral-scripts. "786" is used in Abjad numerology to stand for the phrase "in the name of Allah, the merciful, the compassionate". Orthodox Islam frowns upon using such numerological shorthand, preferring the words of the Qu'ran be preached openly rather than hidden behind a code, but it is nevertheless popular among Muslims in India and Pakistan - which is no doubt where your token originated from.

As such, it fits into the broader category of "Indian temple token (Islamic)".

For interest and comparison, here is an old thread where I learned the significance of "786", as depicted on another Indian temple token.

The design is similar to, but not exactly the same as, this example on Worthpoint. I pretty sure it's not quite as "rare", or as "antique", as the seller there is implying.

Once again, @sap comes through!

Thx for posting this Hajj token @david. Here is a link to a similar piece posted a while back:

Thanks to Sap and Spence for the great input. I did think it was a number ending in 86 but the first numeral had me scratching my head.
