HIya folks, it's been about a week since I've posted, but I've been busy sorting and counting and learning. I've got probably in the neighborhood of $50 - $100 worth of pennies that I've had for many years. I've started separating them by decade and pulled out the LWC to handle separately.

Obviously I have coins in every decade from the 1960s up to modern coins. Many of the rolls I have, have what I would consider bright red, (basically they haven't been touched) in a long time. Especially the early 2000s and 2010s.

I do have a few good looking coins from the 80s and 90s as well. Most of the 60s and 70s are just plain brown.

I know for example that 1960 pennies have both a small and large date, and it seems from YouTube that several years over the last 50 years have had defects, so my plan is to start with the oldest and just keep searching. BUT, now I'm wondering... is that the right approach? Or should I be pulling out all the really pretty coins and submitting pictures for thoughts? I'm blessed with lots of time, and unless the Good Lord calls me home, I can take as long as I need. But I dont' want to waste 6 months either and realize I should have done something different.

All thoughts are welcome.

Nice job so far. You will find that the 60's will most likely have the most for you to study up on with all the RPM's that there are.

Okay, I will check into both those things. I also ordered the little light that folks here suggested so I can take better photos. I'll definitely post some of the nicer coins to get input.

I would narrow things down by focusing on coins that are in nice condition( it's not that cool to find a beat up 1998 WAM cent but it is nice to find one in unc).. there's no point even looking at a beat coin unless it has the possibility of being a major variety. You can make a list of all the years that have potential to be valuable in lower grades( like 1992 cam for example )and make sure to always give those a good look. I'd get a jewelers loop and gloves to.

It sounds like you need to do a bit more studying before you start searching. You can't find something searching if you do not know what you are searching for. For example, there are small date and large dates for 1970-1960-1974. There is a boat load of varieties to learn and look for. http://www.error-ref.com/
There are also three levels of color,red-red/brown and brown.
Slow and steady, good luck to you.

A fundamental part of numismatics is enjoyment. Have fun as you begin the collecting journey, and enjoy learning along the way.

Thanks again all. I have the jewelers loop and the gloves. LOL. And I promise I'm having fun. Even have two friends willing to sell me all their coins they've been throwing in a box for years, so I will stay busy for awhile. I am aware of the Color RD, RB, and BR, but was not aware of that website @John1 so I really appreciate that. There is sooo much information on YouTube to help find errors around certain years and types of coins, those really help as well. The journey continues. :)
