Welp, this one had me scratching my eyes a bit. LOL. Figured it may make someone else chuckle.

Looks more like mercury rubbed. They didn't get the whole surface, the top of both obv and rev is still copper.

@Cujohn: I assumed plated. I don't know what Mercury Rubbing is. But after having some coffee and verifying that the gov didn't make steel cents in 1952, I realized someone was just having fun. Luckily that's not a coin a bought, someone just gave it too me.

MajorPat, "mercury rubbing" is when you put a drop of mercury on a coin and rub it in. A friend's father showed us how to make our steelies look like new with that method in the early '70s. Bare fingers, too. How I'm not dead yet confounds me daily.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Honestly, it's pretty cool that that can be done. But I feel bad if someone actually tried to sell something like this.

When I was in grade school (1978-79 school year) one of the other kids brought in a '54 Lincoln that appeared to be silver. I knew it was fake but everyone else was in awe.
