Afternoon all,

Just picked up this nice 1697 Bristol sixpence from auction, with an interesting and very clear R over sideways R in REX. I've not seen one before, nor can I find any reference to one in the usual literature. I've shown it to Baldwins in London and they don't recall having seen one before.

This is an interesting piece as it also has what looks like a 90 degree die rotation on the reverse.

Has anyone come across one like this before?

Nice coin, Kipster! Not seen one myself. The 1697 sixpence practically breaks all records as being one of the English coins with the most varieties - an old copy of Coin Year Book I own lists 27 - and the mints were in such a hurry to produce silver coins to replace the old hammered ones being withdrawn, so I'm sure a few mistakes were made when the dies were being cut!

Thanks Rob.

A little outside my usual remit, but I do collect William III sixpences and when this came up for auction I thought it looked pretty cool. So after doing some research and coming up with nothing, I just had to have it, even as just a curiosity so as to do some further research.

There seem to have been errors with the mintmark B over E, and a couple of other small errors, but this and the die rotation is super cool.
