Presented is a 1924 commemorative medal that marked the 300th anniversary of the settlement of the future Albany, NY; the 250th anniversary of Albany receiving its City Charter from New York in 1686 was celebrated on the Albany, NY Charter Half Dollar in 1936. (You can access my posts about the coin here:
Albany, NY Charter Anniversary Half Dollar.)
Albany, NY traces its roots to Fort Nassau, a trading/administrative outpost built by the Dutch West India Company in 1614 (five years after Henry Hudson led an exploratory expedition to the area). The original post was only temporary, however. After being damaged by flooding, it was soon relocated and reconstructed. The post was subsequently replaced by the larger Fort Orange in 1623-24. Fort Orange would become a permanent settlement that would grow and eventually become Albany.
The obverse of the medal presents the Coat-of-Arms of the City of Albany, NY. At its center is a Shield; the upper segment of the Shield depicts a beaver gnawing at a felled tree (no doubt the beaver's handiwork!) with the lower portion presenting two sheaves of wheat. Beaver fur trading was an important part of the early Albany (and environs) economy.
Surmounting the Shield is a sloop under full sail. Supporting the Shield (at left, viewer's perspective) is a European settler/farmer, with a local Native American presented at the right. Below the Shield is a ribbon with "ASSIDUITY" (diligent effort) inscribed.
Encircling the Arms at the rim is "IN COMMEMORATION OF THE TERCENTENARY OF THE SETTLEMENT OF ALBANY, NY - 1624-1924"
The medal's reverse features a shield-shaped panel upon which are listed the various names by which Albany, NY was known over its history (I've added the political authority at each time point):
- Fort Nassau / 1614 (Dutch)
- Fort Orange /1624 (Dutch)
- Rensselaerswyck /1630 (Dutch)
- Beverwyck / 1652 (Dutch)
- Albany /1664 (English)
- Willemstadt / 1673 (Dutch)
- Albany / 1674 (English)
The medal shown is white metal, 51 millimeters (2 inches) in diameter with a weight of ~16 grams. I've also seen examples struck in copper/bronze. The medal was struck by Whitehead & Hoag of Newark, NJ.
