Hi all, Wonder if this is normal... I received a 1968 proof set that does not appear to be tampered with, but the Dollar has a large deep gash. Was QC just poor back then? Sorry for the pics through the plastic.

Did you buy that as a proof set or UNC's? It looks like all the scratches and gouge came from the mint as the coins were spewing into the vats. Not much QC in action.

My Mistake, they are an un-circulated set.

Yes, all the hardware that is used at the mint to strike, sort, and spew into bins take their toll. It looks like the dollar was at the bottom of some type of collection before getting sent to the sorter and pliofilm.

Would need to see better photos of the first letter "E" in Elizabeth but that looks more like it was struck through string or wire.
I need to see clear photos of the ends to confirm IMO.

I was thinking struck-through as well.

I would say that it's a Struck Through error. I am not seeing any displaced metal in that area.
Errers and Varietys.

If this is a strike though error, what sort of premium (if any) would it be worth in the sealed set?

I can confirm that it is indeed a strike-through, as for the premium it really depends on how bad a collector may want it. You could always check ebay sold listings for 1968 strike-throughs if any, and get a general idea of how much it could be worth.

Post strike damage before packaging. Shame on you, RCM !Review your quality control procedures. Some collectors would keep this, and consider the damage to be an error, other collectors would ask for a refund. I am a fence sitter, but would seriously consider to sell for a profit (if I could).

sel_69l, this shows classic signs of being struck through string or wire, one end is frayed and the other end goes to a point. 1968 had many different occurrences of struck through anomalies for a few denominations. If you look on ebay you will come across multiple examples that are similar, an genuine IMO.

Struck through wire or thread . Really not that un common . In 1968 the quality control and indeed the Quality of the Nickel Dollars themselves ..,shall we say subpar .

Thank you all. Glad it is not PMD. Not looking to sell, but always to know I got an unexpected deal. I assume that while the error is not rare, it is somewhat unique to find it in the INC set

I have to change what I see. I agree: struck through wire.
