So I recently bought this coin that was graded by a second tier grader. What do you all think the grade is for this coin?

I'm at VF25 but could see it just making VF30.

Looks to be N-3 R3.

Ty2020b, what's a good source for die varieties on these coins? I use Grellman for Braided Hair cents, but don't have a source for these older coins. Thnks.

The Cent Book by John D. Wright is my go-to. Can usually find them for around $100. If you're lucky you can find one with the small supplement pack he wrote up, pointing out a few updates and errors. Worst case if you pick up one and it doesn't come with the supplement I can pm/email it to you. It's just a few extra pages.

Edit: just looked it up and Earlycents has a copy on ebay for $95+ shipping.

Yeah, I'll be cracking this one out and doing an extended acetone soak followed by Verdicare. Will post the ANACS grade tomorrow evening. Just for reference, here's an 1830 VF25 - NGC coin (same die variety) that recently sold at auction. Makes me think mine makes it into VF30 territory, regardless of the ANACS grade.

Thanks, Coinfrog. Frankly, I think the coin would be lucky to push VF30 hard - VF35 seems somewhat overgraded to me. That said, I made what I considered a reasonable bid and got it. I believe it is an N3/R3, which is a nice plus in my book.

the slabbed photo of the obv looks better than the original photos which caused all the assessments to come in at VF25/30. I wouldnt touch it. ANACS probably was a little more generous with this one.

Yes, I've decided to leave well enough alone with this one. Thanks, all.
