Similar Scenario: Within the chest of coins and albums I inherited in 2008 was a Meghrig G-2 Lincoln Cents album, "1909 VDB - 1948S." My father thought it was genuine; purchased it from one of his brothers-in-law. The coin in the photos was in that album. A LCS -- after examination under a scope -- advised it wasn't worth getting graded because it had been cleaned at some point. My question to the CCF: Does it look altered ? If it's genuine but grades out as "Details" is it worth the price of grading ? For now, it's going back in the album. If this post ends up in the "Post Your Counterfeit Coins Here (Educational Thread)" I'll have a definitive answer. . . Thanks " Even a clock that's stopped is right twice a day. "

@cptbilly - best to post your coin in its own thread for better attention to it. I'll alert a Mod dude to hopefully split it off for you.

The VDB initials look correct (slanted crossbar on the B and the whole thing is slightly tilted), the color is off a bit, but that could be the image. Can you get better pictures of this coin on a black background and from straight above (not at an angle - that makes the coin look oblong and can trick the eye)

@nickelsearcher: thanks for the tip re: thread protocols.
@dearborn: will take those photos as you suggest; probably won't happen until Thursday. I have a road trip to Sonora over the Sierras today.
Thanks to you both for the assist. Enjoy your day

Need full pictures perpendicular to the surfaces and a close-up of the mint mark.

The mint mark on the obverse seems too low to me. Compare this graded example from my collection where the mint mark is actually slightly above the end of the tail of the first 9:

Good point, but it could be a different die, However, a good closeup of the MM and date in one image will definitely help.

@Dearborn: You are correct! I forgot about the fourth mint mark that is significantly lower: So... Never mind.

Or you can go out to the PCGS site and check the photos they have of the four dies.

Thanks to all for your suggestions, requests. FYI: the coin is very dark brown; Used bright light and editing tool (pixlr) to make the VDB and Obverse "brighter". Will take a stab at it tomorrow. In the meanwhile, a couple of snaps from today's excursion: CA-108. . .Spectacular Drive
